Is Red Palm Oil Healthy?
Red Palm Oil, like coconut oil, often gets a bad rap due to its high concentration of saturated fat.
However, unlike hydrogenated oil which contains saturated fat in the form of trans-fats, the saturated fat content in Red Palm Oil and coconut oil are both forms of saturated fat that are great for the body and very easily metabolized.
Here is what you need to know about Red Palm Oil and why you need to get some for your kitchen.
Is Red Palm Oil the same as Palm Kernel Oil?
No; though they both come from palm trees, they are different in composition. Red Palm Oil is derived from the fleshy part of the plant surrounding the seed and Palm Kernel Oil is extracted mostly from the seed itself.
Red Palm Oil is solid at room temperature and is typically cold pressed and minimally processed. Palm Kernel Oil on the other hand is usually hydrogenated and therefore contains trans or "toxic" fats.
Red Palm Oil also has a lower saturated fat content than Palm Kernel Oil 52% vs 85% roughly. The composition of these fats also differs between the two oils.
Palm Kernel Oil is often used in processed foods as a substitute for hydrogenated corn oil to make them more appealing to the health community. If you see Palm Kernel Oil on the back of your protein bar...we wouldn't eat it.
Long story short, Red Palm Oil and Palm Kernel Oil are not the same. Avoid foods containing Palm Kernel Oil and use Red Palm Oil instead. Here's why.
Health Benefits of Red Palm Oil
Benefit of Red Palm Oil #1: Vitamins A and E
Red Palm Oil naturally contains high concentrations of vitamins A and E. Its red/yellow color comes from carotenes that are converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is most frequently sited for its importance for vision, but it is also essential for proper immune function.
Red Palm Oil also contains other antioxidants, tocopherols, and tocotrienols (aka, "Vitamin E").
Benefit of Red Palm Oil #2: It's Safer to Cook With
Red Palm Oil has a higher smoke point than other natural oils, which means you can fry and cook with it, without oxidizing it and turning it rancid.
Because it does not contain any trans-fats, Red Palm Oil is a great way to enjoy fried and sauteed foods without having to use hydrogenated corn, soybean, or canola oils. It is also a healthier option when baking cookies or other baked goods.
Benefit of Red Palm Oil #3: Lowering Cholesterol
Multiple studies (see link below) have shown that participants that replaced cheap hydrogenated oil with Red Palm Oil experienced a significant reduction in both bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Replacing trans-fats with Red Palm Oil and/or eliminating the consumption of trans-fats all together may help explain the cholesterol lowering affect and why some researchers believe that it may contribute to a healthy heart.
However, the nutrients in Red Palm Oil probably play a role as well; though the exact cholesterol lowering mechanism is not fully understood.
Additionally, Red Palm Oil also contains Omega-3 fatty acids which are also good for brain and heart health.
Benefit of Red Palm Oil #4: Healthier Skin
As previously mentioned, Red Palm Oil is loaded with tocotrienols (Vitamin E), which have a well documented history of being incredible for skin and hair health.
In fact, many dermatologist often prescribe patients to rub Vitamin E directly on scars and other skin issues to help them fade. It is also believed that Vitamin E may help prevent skin cancer by helping to repair cellular damage done to the skin by frequent sun and chemical exposure.
However, do not apply it directly to the skin if you plan on leaving the house, as it will make you look like you have been fake tanning (i.e., turn you yellow orange).
Conclusion: Red Palm Oil is a much healthier choice than consuming cheap, hydrogentated oils full of trans fats and has been shown in studies to be great for your hair, heart, and skin.
However; be sure to only purchase Red Palm Oil that is habitat friendly, as many Palm Oil products are harvested from areas with large Orangutans populations and cause devastating habitat depletion. Always read the label before buying.
WHERE TO BUY RED PALM OIL?
Red Palm Oil can be found at most Natural Grocers and is also available on Amazon. Due to only a few health minded folks knowing about its magical powers you probably won't find it in most conventional supermarkets....just yet!
As more people #wakeup to the dangers of conventionally processed food and cheap oil, hopefully more supermarkets will begin to carry healthier choices like Red Palm Oil.
In this video, Coach Kevin Rail from the Train for Longevity Podcast discusses the benefits of Red Palm Oil.
