In 1926, Dr. John Tilden wrote a groundbreaking book, Toxemia Explained in which he stated his theory that all disease stemmed from chronic stress and an overburdened immune system that had become "toxic."
According to Dr. Tilden, so-called disease is actually a toxemic crisis of the body where certain systems have become overburdened by the accumulation of metabolic waste or external toxins.
"Cures are what the people want, and cures are what doctors and cultists affect to make; but at most, only relief is given."
- Dr. John Tilden
Dr. Tilden refers to the process by which a stressor overstimulates a body's system as "enervation."
The main point in Dr. Tilden's Toxemia Explained is that when an enervating stressor gets to a toxic level above the body's ability to remove it, disease and inflammation set in.
Examples of enervating stressors described in Toxemia Explained include:
Too much food
Too much exposure to environmental toxins (e.g., cosmetics, household cleaners, heavy metals, air pollution, etc.)
Too much exercise (yes...too much exercise!)
Too much work stress
Too much alcohol, weed, tobacco, etc.
Too much sex (again...yes, too much sex!)
Over consumption of over the counter medications
Too much work and professional stress
Marital stress and too many suppressed emotions
Dr. Tilden states that preventing illness is as easy as balancing the body's enervating forces and reducing them through cleansing, detoxing and fasting periodically to optimize the body's ability to clean and fight illness.
If we become too burdened by stress our bodies become plugged and we can not focus on fighting viruses and preventing bad things from happening to us.
According to Dr. Tilden, most diseases are caused by a toxemic crisis, and when the toxins are lowered back below the toleration point, the sickness, overtraining, etc., will pass.
Dr. Tilden and his book Toxemia Explained started the cleansing and detox movement and some call him the God Father of cleansing. If you are interested in learning more about this theory and protocols we highly recommend you read his entire book to learn more (link below).
Of course medicine has come a long way and we know that genetics can also play a significant role for many and in a way our destiny is already predetermined. That said however, why not give yourself the best shot at beating your genetics by taking incredible care of yourself and cleansing regularly?
Of course, always discuss with your doctor first to ensure these are safe for you.
Beginner Cleansing Protocols
Cleansing Protocol #1: Fasting and Abstinence
No, I'm not talking about abstaining from sex; though, if you are enervated from too much sex, then taking a break may actually be good for you.
Fasting and abstaining from certain foods and drinks (i.e., alcohol, dessert, sugary drinks, etc.) is an easy way to give your body a break. Giving up something for a short period of time, even a week or month can break bad habits and have profound benefits.
The most popular fasting protocols are water fasting and intermittent fasting, which both provide similar benefits. Traditional water fasts are usually for longer periods like 24 hours or more, while intermittent fasts tend to be around 16 hours or so.
Fasting is a great way to give your digestive system a break, since during the fast the idea is to eat little or no food. The primary idea behind fasting is that while you fast the body can focus on processing metabolic waste, burn fat, and focus on repairing damaged tissue.
Cleansing Protocol #2: Cleansing Pills
This one definitely is not for everyone; especially if you are in an environment where you are not near a toilet 24 hours a day. Cleansing pills may also not be suitable for someone with bowel problems.
Cleansing pills have become popular because of the belief that our digestive tracts become impacted overtime with partially digested food.
Some doctors and holistic health practitioners believe this material putrefies overtime, releasing toxic substances into the body. Cleansing pills use herbs, fiber and a gentle laxatives (usually Cascara Sagrada) to help remove the excess food from our gut.
Cleansing Protocol #3: Sauna Use, Exercising and Sweating
As we discussed in our previous post on sauna use (click here), sweating has been shown to push out a lot of waste floating around in our bodies including: ammonia, heavy metals, chemicals absorbed by the pores, etc.
Saunas and intense exercise cause the body to circulate a lot of blood and lymphatic fluid so that the body can process and eliminate the junk floating around in the body.
In the case of the sauna, the body relies on the body's largest detox organ, the skin, to assist in the process by opening up and pushing waste out of the body's millions of sweat glands.
Cleansing Protocol #4: Rest
If you are being enervated by too much stress at work, too many workouts (overtraining), or too many kids activities and parties, then rest is probably the best detox protocol for you.
There isn't much to say about rest except that it is probably your most valuable healing tool. Especially since the body does most of its healing when we sleep.
Sleep isn't the only way to rest though; simply taking a week off from work, doing Yoga instead of lifting weights, or lying around on the couch watching movies can all be beneficial.
Cleansing Protocol #5: Drink More Water
Your kidneys and liver are the body's primary filters. Help them do their job by drinking more clean water and less sugary or acidic junk.
Conclusion: If you believe in the theory Dr. John Tilden proposes in Toxemia Explained, then regular fasting and cleansing may be something you will want to incorporate into your routine.
The type of enervating forces in your life are going to depend on your individual situation, so always do what is best for you based on your diet, lifestyle, medical history, etc. Obviously, as mentioned previously, cleansing isn't suitable for everyone, so talk to your Doctor first.
